The origins of Nike lie in the collaboration between Bill Bowerman, a visionary track and field coach at the University of Oregon, and his former athlete Phil Knight. Bowerman was obsessed with making his athletes faster – and early on realized that shoes played a crucial role in this. In a time when running shoes were heavy and lacking in innovation, he began modifying and improving his own models.

One of the most legendary innovations literally originated at the breakfast table: the so-called waffle sole. Bowerman experimented with his wife’s waffle iron and developed a new sole structure that was lighter and at the same time offered excellent grip. This „waffle sole“ became one of the first major distinguishing features of Nike and marked the beginning of an innovation culture that continues to this day.

Simultaneously, a close relationship developed with one of the most charismatic runners of his time: Steve Prefontaine. Prefontaine was not only an outstanding athlete, but also a symbol of a new, aggressive running mentality. His uncompromising style of running and his rebellious character made him the perfect ambassador for the young brand. Nike capitalized on his popularity to strengthen its own identity in the running world. Although Prefontaine never won an Olympic medal, he had a tremendous influence on the perception of running as an emotional and passionate sport.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Nike began to further expand its technological leadership. A crucial milestone was the introduction of Air technology. This innovation was based on the integration of air cushions into the midsole of a shoe to improve cushioning. The concept was developed significantly by Frank Rudy, who originally came from the aerospace industry. Air technology was first used in the Nike Tailwind and revolutionized the running experience: lighter, more comfortable, and more efficient.

While Nike continued to advance technologically, the brand also increasingly gained traction in top-level sports. An important moment in the Olympic history of track and field was Steve Ovett’s victory in the 800-meter race at the 1980 Olympic Games. His gold medal was not only a sporting triumph but also a symbolic success for the new generation of performance running shoes, the development of which Nike had contributed significantly to. Ovett and Coe represented an era in which technology and training were increasingly intertwined.

In the following decades, Nike remained true to its line: continuous innovation at the service of performance enhancement. This became particularly evident in the development of modern competition shoes starting in 2016. The next major technological leap came with the introduction of carbon elements in the midsole. These so-called carbon shoes combine a rigid carbon plate with reactive foams to significantly increase the energy efficiency of running. Models like the Vaporfly have fundamentally changed the marathon race and led to a multitude of new records.

This development culminated in one of the most ambitious projects in the history of running: the Breaking2 project. The goal was to break the magic two-hour barrier in the marathon for the first time. In 2017, the Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge competed in Monza, supported by a perfectly orchestrated setup of pacemakers, course optimization, and specially developed shoes. Although Kipchoge narrowly missed the mark that year, the project was a milestone in the intersection of science, technology, and human performance.

Two years later, Kipchoge finally achieved the historic feat at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. With a time of 1:59:40, he wrote history – even though the race was not recognized as an official world record. The carbon-plate shoes and innovative foam used demonstrated impressively the potential of modern shoe technology.

For decades, Nike has managed to not only accompany but actively shape the running sport.
